Jeff concentrates his practice in commercial litigation, including intellectual property and unfair competition with particular emphasis on trade secret and trademark disputes for both plaintiffs and defendants in the manufacturing and technology industries.

Jeff led Stevens & Lee to a $40.8 million jury verdict for Mike’s Train House, Inc. (MTH) in a 2004 Michigan trade secrets case – reported to be the 40th highest verdict in the country that year. In another case, Jeff obtained an injunction for a high-tech manufacturing client, preventing the client’s competitor from using misappropriated chemical formulas.

Jeff has successfully prosecuted and defended trademark infringement and unfair competition cases under the federal Lanham Act and state law, including cases involving complex claims of initial interest and reverse confusion. He helped a client to avoid threatened federal trademark litigation by recommending prompt corrective action regarding statements on the client’s website about compatibility with a competitor’s products. Jeff also has defended claims under the federal Copyright Act. He has represented both manufacturers and distributors in distributor termination cases and disputes involving threatened distributor termination.

Jeff won an $8.2 million judgment for a bank client on claims of racketeering under the federal RICO statute, fraud, conversion and unjust enrichment arising out of a check kiting scheme perpetrated by a bank customer. He obtained deposition testimony in the civil case that directly led to the customer pleading guilty and being sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for bank fraud.

Prior to attending law school, Jeff served for five years on active duty as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy and is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He participates annually in the MS U.G.L.Y. bartender competition to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and serves as a director of the Exeter Community Education Foundation and as a member of the development committee of the Bethany Children’s Home.
